BISHOP’S STATEMENT ON THE CURRENT HUMAN RIGHTS SITUATION IN NEGROS

The Bishop assigned to West Visayas Jurisdictional Area of UCCP calls on all the faithful members of the United Church of Christ in the Philippines to stand in solidarity with the families of the victims of extra-judicial killings in Negros. “We grieve for the lost but we bravely stand with the victims in seeking for justice and truth! The atmosphere of impunity that looms in the province of Negros Oriental is also the same atmosphere in Mindanao and elsewhere in the country.”

The UCCP has declared it before and we declare it once more. “The UCCP is not, never was, and will never be a communist.” All our actions and ministries are born out of our deep faith in God and commitment to obey our Lord Jesus Christ. “For you have been a stronghold to the poor, a stronghold to the needy in their distress, a shelter from the storm and a shade from the heat; for the breath of the ruthless is like a storm against a wall”, as the Prophet puts it in Isaiah 25:4.

Peace is God’s covenant with God’s people. Peace is God’s ultimate purpose for his people and desires that people experience it. God said through Prophet Ezekiel “I will make with them a covenant of peace (Ezekiel 34:25). Prophet Isaiah proclaims: You will go out with joy and be led forth in peace…”(Isa 55:12) Zechariah gave his assurance ”…He will proclaim peace to the nations…”(Zec 9:10)
